You may have heard about this event following the highly succesful BBC series “On Thin Ice” which featured Ben Fogle and James Cracknell. The series attracted an average of 3.5 million viewers – not bad for a series about a walk in the snow!
Of course, the Race to the South Pole isn’t just a walk in the snow. It is a race and as such, it is a race to be won. It is also a race which takes place in one of the harshest and least forgiving places on our planet.
Our race will be particularly interesting as it will coincide with the 100th anniversary of man first reaching the South Pole – a magnificent achievement in man’s history and evolution. The race in 1911 was between teams led by our own British explorer Captain Robert Scott and the Norwegian Roald Amundsen.
As well as our British team which will proudly follow in Captain Scott’s steps, there are teams competing from all around the world in this race. There’s even a Norwegian team who will no doubt be following in Roald Amundsen’s steps – how fitting in the 100th year anniversary of the original race!
Why not follow our progress on this site in the run up to, during and after the event? We will be covering a whole host of topics such as the history of the event, the impact on the environment, our physical training and conditioning, our sponsors and our chosen charities.
Once we have raised the funds we need to compete, our fundraising efforts will focus on our chosen charities; the Army Benevolent Fund and Help for Heroes. Both charities are close to our hearts and provide much needed care and support for our nation’s servicemen and women who are affected by the various conflicts in which they are deployed. Again why not follow our planned events, we promise they will be fun.
Finally, and by no means least – we would like to extend our warmest wishes to all our fellow competitors from around the world, and in the race which commemorates the 100th anniversary of Captain Scott’s and Roald Amundsen’s race, particularly to the Norwegian team.
The Race to the South Pole may be in December 2011. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls for us it starts now – let the preparations begin.
